Jelajah Tour of Malaysia 2009

Wrap up: The tour is an eight-stage race of 1,240km in total distance with Stage 1 starting from Kuala Selangor to Ipoh 176.8km, Stage 2, 192km (Ipoh - Sungai Petani), Stage 3, 172.7(Gerik - Tanah Merah), Stage 4, 177km(Pasir Mas - Kuala Terengganu), Stage 5, 199.5km (Kuala Terengganu - Kuantan), Stage 6, 134km (Kuantan - Bera), Stage 7, 116km (Tanjung Malim - Genting) before ending the race in a Criterium race in Dataran Merdeka. After a great race, Will Routley ended up 9th in the GC. Congrats!

Stage 3 is the first day with some climbing. With and avg speed for the last 2 days at just under 43kmh fatigue and heat might play into the day. Will Routley (Jelly Belly) said a dangerous break got away with maybe 2 or 3 of the best climbers in it so they had to come to the front and set tempo to bring it back. It came down to a sprint Will got a lead out from Matty Rice who dropped him of at 300 to go were he did some smashing and crashing with the Iranian green jersey holder for 4th on the day. No bonus time but still moving Will into 10th in the overall GC.

Stage 2 was another relatively flat long 192km stage for the 119 rides that started the day. This was another one to watch out for a breakaway and it went at about 50km. Jelly Bellies Will Routley missed the break but with a big effort was able to bridge up when he realized this was a dangerous move with all the fast guys in it. The break stuck and gained a 15 min advantage over the field by the finish. Will took a shot at the win from about 500m out flying past the Iranian teams lead out train only to be caught at the line for 7th on the day and team mate Mat Rice 4th. Getting enough cold water is the main focus in this hot weather said Will.

Stage 1 was hot and humid and looks to be the theme for the 8 days of racing. It was a flat stage and was looking like a stage for the sprinters but most of the racers were having none of that. It turned into 150 km of non-stop attacks with riders looking for that elusive breakaway. Jelly Bellies Will Routley said he was just trying to make sure nothing got away it was not a day to win the race but it could be lost on a day like this. All the moves were brought back but towards the end the peloton allowed the breakaway duo of Bridgestone-Anchor's Makoto Ijima and Azad University's Amir Zargari a 34-second advantage before they crossed the finish line. Will said it was a good heat adaptation day and came in 66th.in the main group.
